Start-Up your ENTERPRICE

Ama, here back again with an interesting article for you guys. Today we are discussing ENTERPRICE, a new show on BBC 3 created by Kayode Ewumi.

The show follows Kazim (Kayode Ewumi) and Jeremiah (Daniel Ezra) navigating through the logistics of starting a business. Their business is a delivery service called Speedy Kazz. The boys are talented in different ways: Kazim is very energetic and awkwardly promotes the brand, however, Jeremiah has the intelligence and has social awareness. Obviously sometimes, opposites clash, and Kazim and Jeremiah disagree a lot! The show follows the journey of friends trying to be successful entrepreneurs. For those who have not seen this yet, please leave and watch the first episode as this is definitely going to be filled with spoilers.

*******SPOILER ALERT********

Kazim and Jeremiah are aspiring entrepreneurs. Kazz is the founder of the start-up and he is very passionate about his business. So, passionate that he tattooed Speedi Kazz #1 on his chest. He may be a little too motivated. Kazz quit his stable job as a children’s entertainer to run his business full time. Kazz and Jeremiah are broke! They have started their business with no capital.

Question: Is it smart to start and run a business with no capital and no income stream?
Statistics show that individuals who started companies whilst having a full-time job were 33% less likely to fail than the ones who went all in.

Known entrepreneurs who kept their day jobs:

Daymond John from FUBU and Venture Capitalist on the show Shark Tank.

Phil Knight was selling shoes for 5 years before quitting as an accountant and creating the empire we call today NIKE.

Jeremiah was asked to join the team by Kazz and is contemplating whether to go back to University to finish his third year and complete his degree. I relate to this so much, as an aspiring entrepreneur that is balancing a degree, and caught between trying to maximise their higher education, or increasing their ability to succeed at their dream university is quite a dilemma. If you aren’t doing the course that will lead you to the career you desire, you feel as though you are wasting 9k a year.

A crazy statistic shows that 95% of entrepreneurs have a degree or a higher education.
Entrepreneurs with degrees:
Howard Schultz, Starbucks CEO who has changed the world of coffee.

Susan Wojcicki, is the CEO of Youtube. The video digital platform second biggest search engine after being acquired by Google in 2006.

Richard Plepler is the CEO of HBO, a premium subscription TV service which created some of the greatest shows today, Game of Thrones and Insecure.

Kazz may seem very ambitious quitting his job but whether you have a job or not, security is not guaranteed. However, regardless of his current circumstances, he may be able to get where he wants to be because he took the plunge and followed his passion.

Jeremiah may not want to go back to University but either way he can succeed in life. Many entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of University and began some of the greatest names in Tech we know today.

Essentially the point of this conversation is, your path is yours to take. Do not do anything risky unless it is calculated. Your path is rare to others and is unique to you. Whether you remain in full time employment whilst running a business, quitting your full-time job, running a start-up during your degree or quitting half way through to pursue your business, it all depends on what is most suitable for you!

I can’t wait to see what ENTERPRICE has in-store, but what I do know is that we will be covering it! So, keep up with my articles to find out what is happening on ENTERPRICE.
